The Patrick Henry Community College Foundation recently received a $100,000 donation from an anonymous donor to endow four scholarships in memory of late family members. The donation creates the Shelley Frith Drane Performing Arts Memorial Scholarship, the Mary Grace Adkins Culinary Arts Memorial Scholarship, the Melvin L. Adkins Agribusiness Memorial Scholarship and the James Burness Frith Business Administration Memorial Scholarship.

When making the donation, the donor referenced a quote from Benjamin Franklin: “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”

“This donation is very significant as it creates endowed scholarships for program areas that have never had scholarships specifically for them,” said Christopher Parker, vice president for Institutional Advancement and Campus Life at PHCC. “We are very appreciative of the generosity from this donor and we are very excited about the new opportunities students will have in these various programs of study.”

The Shelley Frith Drane Performing Arts Memorial Scholarship will be given yearly to a student who is enrolled in the performing arts program at PHCC and is a full-time student with financial need. The student must maintain a 3.0 GPA while enrolled at PHCC and have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 if enrolling directly out of high school. Priority will be given to a member of the International Thespian Society or to a student who has completed the necessary hours if the school does not participate in the program.

The Mary Grace Adkins Culinary Arts Memorial Scholarship will be presented yearly to a student who is enrolled in the culinary arts program at PHCC and is taking eleven credit hours a semester. The student must also demonstrate financial aid, be involved with community service, maintain a 3.0 GPA while enrolled at PHCC and have at least a 3.0 high school GPA if enrolling directly out of high school. Priority for the scholarship will be given to students who are a single parent.

The Melvin L. Adkins Agribusiness Memorial Scholarship will be awarded yearly to a student who is enrolled in the agribusiness program at PHCC, with priority given to a member of the Future Farmers of America (F.F.A.). The student must be enrolled full-time, demonstrate financial need, maintain a 3.0 GPA while enrolled at PHCC and have at least a 3.0 high school GPA if enrolling directly out of high school.

The James Burness Frith Business Administration Memorial Scholarship will be presented yearly to a student who is enrolled full-time in the business administration program at PHCC. The student must also demonstrate financial need, maintain a 3.0 GPA while enrolled at PHCC and have a minimum of a 3.5 high school GPA if enrolling directly out of high school. Priority for the scholarship will be given to a first-generation college student.

Each scholarship will be offered through the PHCC Foundation. For more information about the scholarship or how to become involved with the Foundation, contact Letitia Pulliam at lpulliam@patrickhenry.edu or 276-656-0250.
